Occupational Therapy
The Occupational Therapy Team collaborates with teaching staff to incorporate therapeutic outcomes into the classroom. This approach helps students access their learning environment and develop functional skills throughout the school day. It aligns with our belief that therapy is most effective when fully integrated into daily activities.
The on-site Occupational Therapy team provides support as outlined in each learner’s Education Health and Care Plan. This typically involves:
Direct Interventions Offered
Direct intervention is tailored to each student's individual needs and may include, but is not limited to: |
Fine motor skills – Focus on various fine motor skills that may affect the student's ability to engage and participate in writing, cutting, drawing, playing, fastening buttons or manipulating cutlery. |
Gross motor skills – Focus on various gross motor skills that may affect the student's ability to engage and participate in daily activities such as dressing or accessing PE lessons. |
Sensory Processing Skills – The Occupational Therapy team does not provide direct intervention for sensory difficulties. Current research and OT guidelines indicate that the most effective support for children and young people with sensory needs involves integrating sensory strategies into their daily routines, ensuring they receive consistent sensory feedback throughout the day. The Occupational Therapy team will offer advice, coaching, training, and sensory programs that should be incorporated into the student’s routine. |
Self-care/self-feeding skills– Focus on the fine and gross motor skills, as well as sensory difficulties that hinder the student’s participation and independence in self-care and self-feeding tasks. This includes exploring alternative equipment and aids. |
Equipment – Assessment, review and adjustment of specialized equipment, including activity chairs, slings, adaptive cutlery, and classroom tools. |
