The Village Curriculum
Our Curriculum is a Model for Progress and Possibilities
At The Village School our curriculum is more than a framework for learning—it is a pathway to progress, empowerment and opportunity underpin by school ethos of Progress, Entitlement and Inclusion. Designed with high aspirations and personal growth at its heart, it ensures that every learner experiences meaningful development in a supportive and dynamic environment.
Our curriculum encompasses seven key areas across the school, creating a 16-year entitlement for all learners by differentiating pedagogies in each class, integrating therapies into our universal provision, expanding the Post-16 offer with a comprehensive accreditation map.
Our curriculum is inspired by seven key areas that guide our journey of discovery and growth:
A Child-Centred and Inclusive Approach
Rooted in our vision of belonging and empowerment and respect, our curriculum is fully child-centred and inclusive. We embrace each student's unique strengths, needs and aspirations, creating a personalised and meaningful curriculum that nurtures confidence, independence and lifelong curiosity.
High Standards and Aspirational Learning
We set high expectations for all learners, providing the right balance of challenge and support to enable them to reach their full potential. Our ambition is to develop a community of lifelong learners ready to thrive, contribute and lead in both local and national contexts.
Preparation for Adulthood (PFA): Empowering Future
Our curriculum is underpinned by the Preparation for Adulthood (PFA) framework, equipping students with the essential skills, knowledge and confidence needed to achieve:
- Independence and daily living skills
- Good health and well-being
- Access to employment, training or further education
- Active participation in the wider community
By embedding these principles, we ensure our students are well-prepared for their next steps, whether in education, employment or independent living.
A Seamless Learning Journey from EYFS to KS5
We see education as a continuous and progressive journey. From Early Years to Sixth From, our curriculum is designed to scaffold skills, ensuring learners build on their strengths at each stage. Inspired by the belief that "It takes a village to raise a child," we work in close partnership with families, businesses and the wider community to create meaningful pathways into the world beyond school.
A Holistic and Engaging Curriculum: Learning with Purpose
Our curriculum is thematic, immersive and highly engaging, encouraging students to explore, experience and express themselves. It is built on key themes that promote both academic progress and personal development:
- Healthy Living – Encouraging physical and mental well-being
- Exploring the Environment – Developing awareness and appreciation of the world around us
- Skills for Life (PFA) – Equipping students with essential life skills
- Helping Others – Fostering empathy and community responsibility
- Self-Advocacy – Empowering students to express their needs, choices and aspirations
Alongside core subjects such as English, Maths and Science, we provide a rich and diverse enrichment programme to expand learning beyond the classroom:
- Creative Arts (Music, Drama, Art & Design, Dance,)
- Outdoor Learning and Forest School
- Enterprise and Work-Related Learning Programmes
- A variety of accreditations and qualifications (The Village Award, OCRs, AQA, Art Awards, GCSE, Entry Level, Sounds of Intent)
- Wellbeing and Self-Regulation Strategies
We are dedicated to instilling a deep sense of responsibility in our students and encouraging them to participate actively in school and community life. By fostering transferable skills and real-world learning experiences, we empower students to navigate challenges with confidence and resilience.
Personalised Learning and Collaborative Support
We recognise that every child’s learning journey is unique. Our ambitious and tailored approach ensures that students receive the individualised support they need to achieve their goals. Teachers work closely with families, therapists, and external professionals to set meaningful, achievable targets and provide a network of support that extends beyond the classroom.
Commitment to Excellence and Continuous Improvement
Above all, we are committed to excellence, innovation and continuous improvement. We set the highest standards for educational quality while constantly seeking new and creative ways to inspire and engage our students.
To ensure meaningful progress, we conduct ongoing holistic assessments, identifying learning gaps early and adapting our curriculum to remain responsive, dynamic and impactful.
At The Village School, our curriculum is a promise of opportunity—a commitment to unlocking potential, fostering independence and preparing every learner for a fulfilling future.
